HbE homozygous hemoglobinopathy: An incidental finding

Abstract:
We presented the case of a 31 year old female patient with history of frontal headache since one week, On workup, she was detected to have hypertension and type II diabetes. CBC reports revealed a microcytic hypochromic blood picture. Following this, peripheral blood smear examination was done. Findings of target cells, few polychromatophils and spherocytes was made on the smear. High performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) was performed which disclosed 89.7% of HbE eluting in the A2 window, suggestive of HbE homozygous hemoglobinopathy.
